Can the symptoms of cutaneous and inhalational anthrax overlap?

Replied on: October 22, 2026 at 11:29:10 PM

Hi Anon! I love this question, Anthrax isn't very commonly used in stories so I'm glad to see the creativity here. The symptoms can overlap in some circumstances, but things will need to align properly. I'm sure with some author magic this will be just fine. Cutaneous symptoms can be acquired via spores entering an open cut, scrape, or other wound on the body. This means that the spores, when disturbed, can disperse into the air around the character and be inhaled which would allow both types of contraction of the bacteria. It is worth noting, though, that the symptoms of inhaled Anthrax are going to show long before cutaneous contraction. Hopefully this helps! Thanks for asking, WMW
